Refrigerator Malfunction Cause of Smoke Odor
By CFD Staff
August 6, 2013
Around 7:00 PM Tuesday evening, Croton's Bravest were still cleaning up and discussing the earlier swimming accident, when the pagers once again went off. 60 Control was sending a full assignment to Building #1 at Half Moon Bay for the odor of smoke in the residence.
Minutes later, CFD companies began to arrive and started to investigate. First-arriving Engine 119 sent their crew into the reporting unit, while next-due Engines 120 and 118 sent personnel into adjacent units and the basement, respectively. The crew of 44 Truck assisted with the investigation and prepared to deploy their 100' aerial ladder to the roof, if needed.
Command kept Tanker 10 and Rescue 18 available outside the guard house in the event of any additional calls in Croton while the other companies investigated. After a little detective work, the source of the odor was traced to a malfunctioning refrigerator in the original unit.
Once the appliance was unplugged, all Croton Fire units returned to service, roughly 30 minutes later. A response of over two dozen volunteers answered this call.
