Near-Drowning Incident Off of Croton Point
By CFD Staff
August 6, 2013
On Tuesday evening just before 5:00 PM, Croton Fire was dispatched to Croton Point Park for a reported Cardiac Arrest on an incoming boat. Per original dispatch information, units were responding to a 21 year-old male with CPR being performed.
On the arrival of Car 2081 (Chief Munson) less than three minutes later, he confirmed the subject was out of the water and that CPR was being performed. The male's friends noticed he was unresponsive in the waters of the Hudson River, removed him from the water and began CPR. As Croton Fire personnel arrived, they took over CPR with the assistance of Croton & Westchester County Police until the arrival of Croton EMS and Ossining Paramedics.
The subject, later reported to be 23 years old, was immobilized and placed in a Stokes Basket, and carried by CFD personnel to the awaiting ambulance for transport to the Westchester Medical Center.
At the time of publication, the subject was in Stable but Serious Condition - likely due to the heroic efforts of his friends that pulled him from the water and started CPR.
The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department encourages EVERYONE to learn CPR. It is an invaluable life-saving tool that, hopefully, you never need to use, but if you do, it may save the life of a loved one.
