Haz-Mat Incident on Route 9
By Chief John Munson
November 20, 2012
At 12:52 on Tuesday afternoon, Croton Volunteers were summoned to Route 9 southbound on the Croton River Bridge for a fluid spill. While en route, units were updated that it was an oil delivery truck leaking product.
On the arrival of Car 2081, it was determined that the truck's driveshaft broke and struck the pipe between the tank and pump, slowly leaking diesel fuel on the roadway.
Realizing the size of the spill and the need to contain it, the Haz-Mat Team from the Montrose VA Hospital Fire Department was added to the box. Working with the crews from E120 & R18, the spill was contained and the damaged pipe was mitigated by the Haz-Mat Technicians of the FDVA.
All units and lanes of traffic were opened shortly after 3pm, when the truck was towed away and a commercial cleaning crew arrived.
The CFD thanks the Montrose VAFD for their expert assistance.
