Electrical Fire in Locomotive
By First Due Reporter
May 8, 2013
At 3:15 this afternoon, a Commercial Alarm was received from the Metro-North Croton-Harmon Yards Locomotive Shop, initially dispatching E120, E119 & TL44. While 60 Control was making the dispatch, Metro-North Fire Brigade notified them that it was for a locomotive on fire in the building. Car 2081 (Chief Munson) was on the road less than a minute after dispatch and, based on the update, had 60 Control upgrade the box, bringing a Full Department Response.
On the arrival of Munson, he established Command and reported an electrical fire inside a locomotive car, outside the building on the south end of the yard. The Metro-North Fire Brigade - using two hose lines from within the building - had the fire contained. Command had the crew of Engine 119 report to the train, and assigned remaining units to inspect the building for damage.
Using one of the hose lines from the facility, the crew from Engine 119 completed extinguishing of the fire. Being the inside of this locomotive is very tight, the crew had to be split up, sending two firefighters inside and keeping the rest of the seven member crew on the outside.
Command placed the fire "under control" at 3:35 PM, and all units were returned to service ten minutes later. Thanks to the fast actions of the Metro-North Fire Brigade, the fire was contained to the locomotive and no damage occurred to the building.
