The Dangers of an Open Burn
By Chief John Munson
April 13, 2013
Two times this past week, the Croton-on-Hudson FD was summoned to an illegal open burn in the village. On the first occasion, the unattended fire began to spread to nearby debris, prompting a neighbor to call 911. While it may not seem to be an urgent matter, there is a great risk when a person chooses to disobey NYS law regarding this act.
Recent weather conditions have prompted several "Red Flag" warnings in our area. This indicates that the air and ground conditions are dry and there is a significant amount of wind, a recipe for serious brush fires to occur. This proved true twice in Croton with two fairly substantial brush fires that happened in the Harmon section of the village.
In 2009, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation implemented new regulations on Open Burns, and that information can be viewed here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/58519.html
