E119 & FAST to Buchanan All-Hands
By Department Reporter
April 6, 2013
At 6:00 PM this past Saturday, the Buchanan FD was summoned to Rockledge Avenue in that village for the reported structure fire. Within minutes they arrived on scene and confirmed a working house fire, and struck the First Alarm, bringing assistance from the Montrose VA Hospital, Montrose and Croton Fire Departments to the scene.
Car 2081 and Engine 119 were en route moments later, with a more-added sense of urgency than usual. The address was the home to a relative of many in our department, specifically members of our Washington Engine & FAS Team. In addition to the usual things running through our guys' minds, was the well-being of their family members. Luckily, everyone managed to escape the fast-moving blaze.
On arrival, the team split into three groups, covering all sides of the building. With enough personnel to retain as the FAST, a small group of personnel were used to assist with some Truck Company functions (opening up, venting and controlling utilities) and Engine Company roles (extinguishing of fire).
Thanks to a fast, aggressive response by the Buchanan, Montrose and Montrose VA fire departments, damage was as minimized as possible, even though the fire literally took off in a matter of seconds. All Croton FD personnel and units were clear of the scene within two hours.
On behalf of the CFD members related to the fire victims, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our brothers from the departments mentioned for their valiant efforts. Thank you all!
