Small Residential Fire During Major Winter Storm

February 1, 2021

For nearly two full days, a Winter Storm continued to wreak havoc on our region, bringing almost two feet of snow, strong wind gusts and freezing temperatures to our area. While our members were on standby - for a period of over 24 hours - in our three Stations, we were dispatched to the reported house fire on Monday night.

At 10:10 PM on February 1st, a Full Department Response with Tankers from Millwood and Yorktown as well as a Firefighter Assist & Search Team from Ossining FD were dispatched to the 2100 block of Quaker Ridge Road for a structure fire.

Car 2082 (Assistant Chief Munson) was first to arrive, reporting the driveway was steep, long and covered with snow and ice. An initial check found that a tree limb fell, pulling on the home's electrical service wires causing them to short out and create a fire in a bedroom. The owner and occupants were able to extinguish much of the fire but FD services would still be needed.

Command had our two Utility vehicles - both 4WD - come up the driveway with personnel, tools and extinguishers to complete extinguishment and to open up walls and ceiling to confirm no additional fire activity. Members removed a smoldering bed and other room contents outside and secured the home's electrical service until an electrician could make the needed repairs.

Units operated for about 90 minutes before returning to service.
