Department Drill: Residential Fire Operations

On Monday night, 40 of Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department's volunteers participated in a training night at the Westchester County Fire Training Center in Valhalla. The focus of this training was to review department operations at residential structure fires and to utilize some of our newer and returning officers in vital roles.
Utilizing the propane-fired burn building, personnel were cycled through four evolutions simulating a single family structure fire that could easily be found in our response area. Teams - made up of members from all five CFD companies - were rotated between the common roles taken at a fire scene which included primary and secondary fire attack teams, search teams, a F.A.S.Team and exterior support personnel from Explorer Post 2089 assisted with common outside functions.
Emphasis was made on preparing for the unexpected - including fire extension, additional "victims" trapped inside and communications issues.
Every member in attendance performed exceptionally well, and continue to prove that - even though we are a 100% volunteer organization - we handle emergencies with professionalism and proficiency.
