CO Incident on Radnor Avenue
By CFD News
November 16, 2014
As personnel were eating lunch and recounting the lessons learned from the Tanker Drill held earlier this morning, Croton's Bravest were sent to the 100-block of Radnor Avenue for an alarm sounding.
Shortly after 12:30 PM, Engine 118, Tower Ladder 44 and Rescue 18 were sent to the report of smoke and CO alarms sounding at a residence. Car 2089 (DC J. Munson) arrived first, reporting nothing showing from the exterior of the dwelling, and that he had audible alarms going off.
Car 2083 (AC Colombo) arrived next and assumed Command, assigning 2089 to "Operations." At this point, the dispatched apparatus arrived and began receiving elevated levels of CO in the home. Command then added E119 to the box to assist.
The crews of all four companies worked together, removing the burning contents from the fireplace, and venting the home of CO. Operations designated a team of three from E119 as a RIT while crews worked inside, as they were wearing SCBA and operating within a hazardous atmosphere.
With the situation mitigated, all companies returned to service shortly after 1:00 PM.
This incident is a good time to remind all of our followers that you should have your chimneys and fireplaces cleaned, as well as checked for proper function, every year. Also, having working Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarms can give you early notice of a potential emergency - make sure you have them in your home and ensure they work!
