Busy Friday Night for CFD Volunteers
By Deputy Chief John Munson
April 25, 2014
At 8:25 PM the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department, as well as Tankers from Millwood & Yorktown, were dispatched to Pond Meadow Road in the Town of Cortlandt for a reported chimney fire.
On the arrival of Car 2081 (Chief Vlad), he reported a 1 1/2 story, 30 x 30 residence with visible fire from the chimney threatening the roof. He ordered the first arriving Engine (E118) to stretch a line and wet down the roof as a precaution, and sent the crew of next-due Engine 119 to the interior to investigate. The crews of E120 & TL44 assisted with venting and salvage operations.
The fire was contained to the chimney, and through the use of one 2" hose line, "chimney chains," and removing debris from the fireplace it was extinguished without incident.
All units returned to service within 55 minutes. A total of about 30 CFD volunteers answered this call.
At 10:15 PM, Croton Fire - along with Croton EMS - were dispatched to the 40-block of Bungalow Road in the village for the report of a motor-vehicle accident with one vehicle into a structure.
On the arrival of Chief Vlad, he reported a single car accident into a telephone pole with no structural involvement. He then ordered Engine 119 to enter from the east and send their crew up to assist. E120 was held by the Duck Pond to divert traffic.
The female occupants were out of the car and were assessed by Croton EMS, who transported them to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. Croton FD units remained on scene for about 40 minutes until the vehicle was towed away.
Another strong showing of CFD volunteers responded to this call, with a total near two dozen.
