| A deep freeze has hit our area over the past few days, keeping the Croton-on-Hudson FD's volunteers busy.
On Saturday, the CFD handled two incidents as follows;
At 9:23 AM units handled a Carbon Monoxide incident along the 300-block of Grand Street. Units had elevated levels of the gas in the home and removed same. The cause is believe to be a joint-issue between a generator and an oil burner. Both were disabled and the home was vented to remove the toxic gas. Car 2081, Car 2083, Engine 118 & Rescue 18 on the assignment.
At 7:20 PM, volunteers responded to a Glengary Road home to assist with a broken water pipe. The problem was quickly isolated and turned over to the homeowner. Car 2083 & Engine 118 handled this incident.
Sunday was the busiest day of 2014 (so far);
At 8:27 AM units were dispatched to the Croton-Harmon Train Station for the report of people in a stalled elevator. Prior to the FD's arrival, the elevator doors opened, the parties left and all units returned to service. Car 2081, Car 2083, Engine 120 and Rescue 18 were on the run.
At 10:11 and again at 11:55, a "Town Box" was dispatched for a Residential Alarm on Teatown Road in the Fire Protection District. The alarm was set off by water getting in to a smoke detector from a leaking roof. The detector was removed and a container was put in place to catch the runoff. Car 2081, Car 2082, Car 2083, Engine 118, Tower Ladder 44 & Tanker 10 handled these calls.
As a light rain fell in the afternoon, roadways turned to ice in a matter of minutes. Croton Fire volunteers responded to two Motor-Vehicle Accidents within a half hour of each other.
The first was on the backside of Half Moon Bay Drive, where a car slid off the road and hit a tree. The driver sustained no injuries and declined medical attention. Car 2081, Car 2083, Engine 120 and Rescue 18 handled this incident.
While operating at the latter, 60 Control dispatched Engine 118 & Tanker 10 to the 200-block of West Mount Airy Road for a vehicle on fire after having a collision. Units found a car that slid down the hill into a stone wall, which sustained significant damage but was not on fire. Units remained on scene to close the road until the vehicle was removed and the road was salted by the Town of Cortlandt. Car 2081 & Car 2083 were also on scene.
The last call of Sunday evening was dispatched as units were taking up from the above. A "Full Department Response" was sent to the upper village for the report of smoke in an apartment. Crews checked all three floors, including a laundromat and apartments, with no findings. Over three dozen CFD volunteers turned out for this run, staffing Car 2081, Car 2082, Car 2083, Engine 118, Engine 119, Engine 120, Tower Ladder 44, Tanker 10 & Rescue 18. |
