CFDFAST on Well-Involved Dwelling in Mohegan
By CFDFAST
September 18, 2013
Shortly before 11:00 AM this Wednesday, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department was requested Mutual Aid to the Lake Mohegan Fire District for a working house fire. The blaze was in the Cortlandt Manor section of their district on Maple Avenue. In just five minutes, a full crew of certified personnel were responding.
On arrival, the CFD's crew of fifteen was split up to provide FAST personnel on all sides of the house. Mohegan and Montrose firefighters were heavily engaged in the fire attack, using multiple handlines and an elevated water stream from Mohegan's Ladder 35.
Due to the overwhelming amount of stored items in the home, interior firefighting efforts were hampered, causing Command to pull back the troops and hit it from outside for a while. Once the fire was somewhat contained, crews re-entered the building to snuff out hot spots and hidden pockets of flames.
With the strong turnout of CFD personnel, it was decided to offer some of our men to help suppress the flames and overhaul the home. Crews had placed a couple of portable ladders to open gable vents and exterior walls to hit stubborn areas of hidden fire, and also worked in the attic and living space of the house to ensure extinguishment.
The Mohegan IC released the Croton crew around 1:35 PM. Even though there were some occupants in the home when the fire broke out, they did manage to escape unharmed.
