At 13:25 on Saturday, Croton Fire was called to the Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School for a gas main struck by a contractor.

On the arrival of Car 2081 (Chief Munson), he confirmed that the main was struck between the street main and curb valve shutoff to the school itself. He established command and requested Con Edison on a priority.

Croton Police was on scene and in the process of evacuating the homes on the block. Arriving CFD companies assisted with this process, secured a hydrant with E118, and established a safety perimeter.

With CFD companies committed to this incident - and with Engine 119 out of town on a training detail - Command had an Engine from Ossining relocate to Station 1 for coverage.

Once Con Edison shut the gas off, CFD companies began to allow residents into their home and began opening up the roads. Command placed the incident under control at 14:19, and all units returned to service at 14:43.

A similar incident occurred just eight days ago at this location.

Croton Fire had a response of nearly two dozen volunteers to this incident.
