1st Due Minor Residential & Mutual Aid Chimney Fires

At 11:20 AM on Friday, March 24th, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department was summoned to a residence on Pond Meadow Road for a reported Chimney Fire. Due to this incident being in our Non-Hydrant area, a Tanker from Yorktown Heights FD was automatically dispatched based on the nature of the call.
Car 2081 was first to arrive about six minutes later and was met by the homeowner reporting her house was filling with smoke while using the wood burning stove. While conducting a rapid assessment of the situation, it was realized that smoke was coming from the wall behind the wood burning stove and the floor leading up to the second floor of the home. At this point Command relayed to all units there was a possible fire in the wall.
Engine 118, Tanker 10, YHFD Tanker 14 & Utility 14 arrived almost simultaneously and began to open up and look for the source of the smoke. Engine 120 was positioned to facilitate a relay operation and an additional Engine (225) from the Montrose VAFD was called to serve as a Source Engine if needed (as our Engine 119 is out for maintenance).
Crews found a smoldering fire involving the spray foam insulation and wooden structural members between the basement and a first floor storage space. A pre-connected 2" hose line from E118 was used to extinguish same, and members checked for any signs of fire spread elsewhere, to which there was none. Command placed the incident "Under Control" one hour after dispatch, however units operated for another 30 minutes mopping up and working with Town of Cortlandt Code Enforcement to ensure the fire was extinguished.
Later, at about 9:20 PM and after answering another two responses in the Village, the CFD was dispatched Mutual Aid to a Chimney Fire with possible extension into the attic on Havell Street in Ossining Village. Taking in this run were 2081, U14 and U208 with 10 members. On scene, Ossining FD members made a quick stop of an active chimney fire and prevented it from extending too far beyond and into the residence. Our team was released from the scene by Battalion 12 about 30 minutes later.
