Around 9:07 on the morning of April 30th, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department was notified of an overturned boat with 2 people in the water near the Croton River's Silver Lake Park.
Upon arrival, we found that a boat with 2 Croton DPW employees had capsized, stranding one party on a rock, just past the middle of the river towards Quaker Bridge Road in Cortlandt. One other party was one the southern shore awaiting help as well.
FD and EMS assets - including Tower Ladder 44, Rescue 18, Marine 52 and Montrose VA Engine 225 and Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps Ambulance 74A1 - were sent to that side of the river to assist Croton Police, whom were on scene several minutes already and attempting to get their inflatable boat into position to affect the rescue.
Meanwhile, members of Engine 119 began assembling their water and rope rescue equipment on the northern side of the river, while Utility 14 and Marine 32 went to the mouth of the river near Croton-Harmon Train Station to come upstream and assist.
Additional assistance was called from the Westchester County Technical Rescue Team and the Westchester County Police Department Special Operations Division and was responding when CPD personnel - using their inflatable boat - was able to make the rescue and bring the aided to shore.
With the situation under control, Command (Car 2083 / Assistant Chief Munson) cancelled the incoming County Units as well as the VAFD Engine.
Our thanks to all of the above for their assistance on scene, as well as to the Ossining Fire Department and Montrose FD for providing standby coverage until we freed up some of our units on scene.
