On Tuesday, August 16th, we reluctantly and sadly said farewell to a lifelong member and friend, Past Captain John C. Barirde of Harmon Engine Company No. 3. He passed away at only 53 years old, leaving behind his wife, Kim, and children Johne and Hannah.

"Johnny B." had been a member of the CFD for over 35 years, where he has held many positions including Captain four times and provided guidance and mentoring to several of our rank and file. In addition to his roles here with the CFD, he also had recently retired as a Sergeqant with the Croton Police Department, after 26 years of decorated service. In addition to his service to us here in Croton, he also spent many years as a Fire Investigator with the Westchester County Cause & Origin Team.

He can be remembered for so many things - Cop, Fireman, Friend, Father, Husband, Teacher and Mentor - but we all know the one thing he was most famous for - his mustache. No matter how he wore it, how bushy it was or how crazy the waxed curls would get - you always knew that behind it all was one of the most humble and kindest guys you'd ever meet.

A funeral was held on Monday, August 22nd, with dozens of firefighters and police officers in attendance. A police motorcycle escort - consisting of some 20 cycles - led the procession of vehicles from Croton to his final resting place in Putnam Valley. Croton Fire apparatus were positioned at different points along his final ride, with members saluting him one last time. A large American Flag was flown at the end of the Croton district line, hanging beautifully between our TL44 and Millwood FD's L52. His apparatus, Engine 120, followed him to his burial. As a final gesture to our friend, all of our apparatus wore big, bushy mustaches during his funeral service.

We will miss you dearly, friend, and please take comfort in knowing that we will never forget you and will continue to look after your family.

A "gofundme" donation page has been created to help his family during this trying time. The link can be found below.

The CFD would like to thank Millwood FD for helping with the funeral service, and to the Montrose VA FD for providing an Engine Company to help answer calls during the Funeral.
