At 12:10 PM this Friday afternoon, Croton's Bravest were dispatched to Mount Airy Road West in the Town of Cortlandt for a tree down on a vehicle, with downed power lines and a brush fire.

Upon the arrival of the CFD, the two van occupants were out of the vehicle, and the downed power lines caused a brush fire on the side of the road. The tree, which was fairly large, fell on top of the vehicle which was driving westbound. Thanks to the raised fiberglass roof of the van, the impact resulted in the two men riding in it sustaining very minor injuries. Any vehicle with a normal roof would have likely seen worse injuries.

Car 2089 (DC J. Munson) had West Mount Airy Command, and used Engine 118, Tanker 10, Rescue 18 and Utility 14 to both divert traffic and extinguish the fire - once Con Edison arrived and killed power to the downed lines. Using a handline from E118 and a side chute on T10, the fire was extinguished and the area was soaked down to prevent it from re-igniting.

Croton EMS called and took the two men to a local hospital for evaluation, as a precaution.

Once power was killed the fire was extinguished, and the Town of Cortlandt DPW moved the tree, the roadway was reopened nearly 2 hours later.
