Memorial Day at Washington Engine

Members of the Washington Engine Company No. 2, and their families and friends, participated in their annual Memorial Day Breakfast Service yesterday to remember those no longer with us. This annual tradition goes back at least 75 years, possibly longer, at our firehouse.

Company President Joe Streany once again played the role of "Emcee," welcoming our guests and leading the ceremony. Department Chaplains and Honorary Members of WECO John Coyne and Judy Anderson, opened the service with a remembrance prayer. Past Chiefs Stephen Dominello, Gerry Munson, John Munson and Art Roosa Jr. read the names of the Company's deceased. This year's service recognized another of our Honorary Members, Mrs. Nicola "Mickey" Streany, mother of Joe and Frank Streany, that passed away in December.

Following this, past member and wife of our Captain, Maureen Munson, read a "Fireman's Prayer," which was followed by the placing of the memorial wreath at our monument and remembrance tree by Past Chiefs Dominello and Roosa, while Past Captain Mike Feminella tolled out a "3-2" call to welcome home our deceased members.

Feminella then presented awards to last year's Top Ten Responders, followed by additional awards to some of the Company's members that went above and beyond in 2014. Feminella then handed off the service to current Captain Munson, who presented him with a " 25 Years of Service" pin, then awarded a "30 Years of Service" pin to Past Captain Ed Walsh. The Captain then pointed out that the Company's senior-most members - Donald Fagan and John Giglio - both of whom are in their 71st year with WECO, were in attendance. Others senior members present were Bob Anderson Jr. (49 Years) and President Streany, now in his 46th year with the Company.

In his closing remarks, President Streany reminded everyone to always remember the sacrifice of the men and women in our Armed Forces, and to give thanks for everything we have because of them. He also took a moment to extend our Company's appreciation to Firefighter Kyle Mallory, who is currently serving in the United States Marine Corps., based in Japan.

Following our services, members attended the village's Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Corners, led by VFW Chairman and Captain of Croton Fire Patrol No. 1, John Ghegan. Members of all five companies were in attendance, along with Croton EMS and many other residents.
