On Sunday, Croton's Bravest were called - twice - to Croton Point Park for the report of a tree on fire.

The first incident was dispatched at 18:07 as a tree fire near the beach. Car 2089 (D/C J. Munson) was first to arrive and reported a stump on fire across from the beach on the south side of the road. Westchester County Police & Park Rangers reported that a party discarded their hot BBQ coals in the stump, causing the fire.

First arriving Tanker 10 stretched the 200' pre-connected 1 3/4" line, and using their chain saw and tools - along with equipment from E120 - extinguished all of the visible fire. Car 2081 (Chief Vlad) arrived assuming Command, giving Car 2089 "Operations." All units returned to service within an hour.

At 21:18, Park Rangers came upon the same stubborn stump which again was on fire. CFD units, under the command of Car 2083 (A/C Colombo) returned to the scene and - like earlier - used a 1 3/4" hose line from E120, as well as chain saws and tools from all three apparatus (E120, T10 & R18) on the assignment to completely dismantle the burnt up stump.

The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department reminds everyone to please use caution and discard of hot ash properly. It isn't uncommon for a person to dispose of ash thinking it is completely extinguished, only to find it has caused another fire.
