November 27, 2017

At 5:30 PM on Monday, the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department was dispatched to the Springvale Apartments in the Montrose Fire District for a working fire. Command was requesting our Firefighter Assist & Search Team (FAST) on top of their initial "10-75" assignment to the scene. Immediately after we were dispatched, the 2nd Alarm was struck, bringing additional assets from the area to the scene.

Car 2082, Car 2083, Engine 119 & Utility 14 arrived just a few minutes after dispatch with more than fifteen members. With fire running up the entire rear wall of the 3 level apartment building, and heavy fire showing on two floors, E119 was requested to immediately put an attack line to work. Three members took care of this assignment while the rest of our members continued to fulfill the FAST responsibility.

While FAST members were throwing portable ladders in the front and rear of the building, an "Urgent" radio transmission was monitored from personnel inside, reporting that the floor had been compromised in the middle level apartment involved. Luckily it was discovered quickly and nobody was injured, as you can see in the attached photos the fire burned a hole into the floor large enough for members to fall through.

While operating at this fire, the remaining Croton FD units were dispatched to a chimney fire on Mount Green Road. Car 2083 (Pesavento) confirmed the chimney fire and used personnel from E118, E120, TL44, T10 & R18 to mitigate the situation rather quickly. With Car 2082, E119 & U14 being released from Montrose, they also responded to this incident and stood fast until released.

Responding to the fire in Montrose was a total of about 20 CFD members, and handling the call on Mount Green Road we saw a total response of about 50 Croton FD volunteers.

Your Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department responded to 5 calls for assistance today, all between 3:30 and 7:30 PM.
