Residents noticed smoke filling their home at a South Ledge Loop home around 12:30 AM Thursday, summoning the volunteers of the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department.

Car 2082 (1st Assistant Chief Colombo) arrived minutes later reporting smoke showing from the roof line and that all occupants were safely out of the home. He then directed the first-in Engine Company - Engine 119 - to drop their 5" supply line in the driveway and lay up to the house some 300 feet in. A four-man crew of E119 rapidly advanced a 200' pre-connected 2" attack line to the 2nd floor. At this point, Command struck the "10-75" for a "working fire." Car 2083 (2nd Assistant Chief Pesavento) had "Operations," the E119 Captain (Ferguson) had "Division 2," and Safety Officers F. Streany & J. Streany had "Accountability" and "Safety."

The next arriving Engine (118) grabbed the hydrant and completed the lay from E119 with the help of E120. Members from these two companies and TL44 made their way up to the slate roof and began opening it up. A second 200' pre-connect from E119 was advanced by another crew of four members as a backup inside the home. While water was being put on the fire, members simultaneously opened the roof, opened interior walls, conducted searches, turned off the home's electrical service and shut off the home's propane service. An additional crew of CFD members was designated as a FASTeam until the arrival of our Mutual Aid one from Ossining FD.

The fire itself was on the second floor of the home, within an attic and crawlspace that spread into the roof. Using Thermal Imagers to seek out hidden fire and hot spots, members were able to contain it without it breaking out into the bedrooms or other parts of the home. Portable lights from E119 & Rescue 18 were used to help overhaul and salvage. The fire was extinguished in short order, with no injuries reported to residents or firefighters.

In addition to the OFD FASTeam on scene, the Mask Service Unit from Buchanan FD was on hand to refill depleted air bottles by our members. Ossining and Croton EMS were on scene as a precaution, and coverage was provided at our Harmon Firehouse by a Montrose Engine and Ossining Tower Ladder.

The Westchester County Cause & Origin Team determined the fire as non-suspicious. Once they completed their investigation, all units cleared the scene around 4:00 AM.

The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department had over 40 volunteers at this incident, with another 12 provided by our Mutual Aid companies.
