At 5:31 AM on Monday, January 23rd, the Croton-on-Hudson FD was dispatched Mutual Aid to the City of Peekskill for a working structure fire. Our Engine 119 was assigned as the "FAST Company" and responded with a crew of five members minutes later.

Upon arrival at the Diven Street blaze, the team conducted a 360 survey of the three-level, multi-family dwelling and observed fire conditions on all three floors. Peekskill members, along with an Engine Company from the Montrose VA Hospital FD, were making progress and darkening the fire down. Prior to our arrival, members of the VAFD rescued one occupant from the second floor via a portable ladder.

Sadly, a search of one apartment found one occupant that was unable to escape, and tragically perished in the fast-moving inferno. Fortunately her husband and son were able to escape unharmed.

Also assisting on scene was the Buchanan FD's Mask Service Unit and Peekskill EMS. Mutual Aid from Continental Village FD and Montrose FD was brought in to the City for coverage assignments.

Croton units cleared the scene around 9AM.

Our appreciation to Rob Casasanta, John Nohai & Dave Kempter for their photos.
