June 30, 2016

At Midnight on Thursday, following an evening of hands-on training for Croton's Bravest, we were dispatched to 100 Maple Street for a reported structure fire.

Car 2089 (Deputy Chief John Munson) arrived first about two minutes later reporting fire showing on sides Bravo (left) and Charlie (rear) of a three-story wood-frame residence and transmitted the "10-75" Working Fire Assignment. Car 2083 (Pesavento) arrived next taking Maple Street Command, followed shortly after by Car 2081 (Mansfield) when he arrived. At that point 2083 coordinated efforts on the exterior and Car 2082 (Colombo) assumed "Operations."

Engine 118 (Chemical) arrived first and deployed a 2" pre-connected attack hose line in the front door and up to the second level of the home to begin extinguishment of the rapidly moving blaze. The fire was located in an enclosed porch off the rear of the home and was going into the kitchen window and up to the third floor from outside. Once the fire was darkened down on the second floor, the line was re-positioned and taken to the third floor to access the blaze, which was also in the attic at this point.

A second hose line - a 2 1/2" - was taken up side "Bravo" and darkened down the fire that was beginning to consume the exterior and roof. While this occurred, crews conducted both Primary and Secondary Searches of the home and used tools and Thermal Imagers to open up and check for fire extension. Due to the quick response of Croton's Volunteers, the fire was extinguished in short order and further damage to the home was limited.

Personnel from second-arriving Tanker 10 (Washington) assisted with getting the two attack lines into place while members of E120 (Harmon) secured a hydrant to feed E118. TL44 & R18 members placed ground ladders, portable lights and sent manpower to assist with the tasks that needed to be completed both inside and outside of the blaze. Firefighters located the family dog inside the home, scared, but unharmed and returned it to the owner.

Ossining FD was on scene with Tower Ladder 42 and their Firefighter Assist & Search Team, as well as Buchanan FD with their Mask Service Unit - which replenishes the air bottles our members wear while inside the smoky blaze.

EMS standby units on scene were from Croton EMS, Ossining EMS and the Cortlandt EMS Rehab Unit, which provided additional drinking water to our members.

Over 50 of Croton's Bravest were on scene, along with another 20-25 from our Mutual Aid companies. During the incident, coverage in Croton for any additional alarms was provided by a Montrose Engine Company and a Lake Mohegan Ladder Company.

Westchester County Battalion 10 was on scene and helped coordinate a response from the Red Cross to help the displaced family, and the Cause & Origin Team also provided assistance. All units were clear of the scene at 2:45 AM.

Thanks to "Kempter's Fire Wire" on Facebook for the photos.
