March 4, 2015

March has already been busy for Croton's Bravest, and today was no exception.

At 7:28 AM, a Full Department Response was dispatched to the 200-Block of Cleveland Drive for a reported stove fire. First arriving Engine 119 reported a single story residence with nothing evident from the exterior and entered the home to investigate, while Car 2082 (Mansfield) arrived and assumed Command.

The crew was met with a moderate smoke condition inside the front door, and located an active fire in an electric range. Using a fire extinguisher, the flames were knocked down, allowing personnel to remove the range from the house to completely quell the flames. Simulataneously, personnel checked for fire extension and used a portable fan to ventilate the home of smoke and Carbon Monoixde, which was found to be at a dangerous level.

With the situation under control, Command held E119 & E118, and released E120 & R18. Once the house was all clear, all Croton Fire units and personnel took up and returned to service at 8:10 AM.

Next, around 4:05 PM, units were dispatched to a fluid spill investigation on the 100-Block of Old Post Road North. While the crews of Engine 119 & Rescue 18 investigated what appeared to be some motor oil spilled, the discovered a substantial gas leak in a manhole. Cars 2082 (Mansfield) and 2083 (Colombo) were on scene, and upgraded to a Full Department Response to investigate.

Crews - working with Con Edison - opened up manholes and checked multiple homes to ensure gas had not traveled into them underground. No hazards were found in any of the homes between Prospect Place and Stevenson Place, and all units returned to service after close to three hours, at 6:45 PM. A response of close to 30 CFD volunteers answered this call.

Shortly after taking up from the above gas leak, 60 Control dispatched our FAS Team at 6:54 PM to a multiple alarm structure fire in Peekskill. Answering that call was Car 2083 (Colombo) with Engine 119 and a dozen volunteers. Mutual Aid from Buchanan, Continental Village, Mohegan and Montrose were also on scene, with coverage in the City from Buchanan and Verplanck. The Croton Fire units cleared Peekskill and returned to Croton at 9:30 PM.

While operating in Peekskill, yet another Full Department Response was transmitted at 7:58 PM for the Bari Manor Apartments complex on Old Post Road South for a reported boiler malfunction. First arriving crews from TL44 & T10 found no threat to the apartment, shut off the appliance and notified the Super to check on it. Car 2081 (Vlad) had command. Units were in service from this incident at 8:15 PM.
