CFD Hosts Mutual Aid Tanker Drill

In life, we tend to take some things for granted. For us in the fire service, one of these things is the availability of fire hydrants and an adequate water system supplying them. In the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department's first due area, roughly half of our area lacks well-operating hydrants or hydrants altogether. Because of this, we constantly train for it.

This past Sunday, Croton Fire organized a drill at The Danish Home for the Aged located in the southern part of our jurisdiction, known as the Quaker Bridge Fire Protection District. This exercise was to evaluate our current response plans to this facility.

Participating in this training were all of Croton's apparatus, as well as Tankers from Bedford Hills, Continental Village, Millwood, Pocantico Hills, Somers and Yorktown, and Engine Companies from the Montrose and VA Montrose Fire Departments.

The drill tried our pre-plan based on an initial response, as well as our Level 1 (10-75) and Level 2 (2nd Alarm) plans. Engine 118 & Tower Ladder 44 arrived first, each laying several hundred feet of 5" hose as a supply line. Engine 120 completed the lay from the main entrance on Quaker Bridge Road East to where E118 started their lay. E119 then backed into position to pull water from portable ponds dropped by Tanker 10 and Yorktown T14.

The Engines from Montrose and the VAFD went to a local pond on Quaker Ridge Road to establish a fill site for the Tankers. For nearly two hours, units flowed water from the ladder pipe of TL44 and ran shuttle operations, delivering and flowing nearly 100,000 gallons of water in total.

The CFD thanks the Danish Home, as well as all participants from Croton and neighboring departments, for their assistance with this vital training. A thank you goes out to Ossining FD for providing coverage of our district during this exercise.
